Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is considered the best quarterback on the planet, and the consensus is it isn\u2019t even close.<\/p>\n
The AFC championships, the Super Bowls, MVPs and all the highlight plays make it an easy choice\u2026 but not for former NFL player Chris Canty.<\/p>\n
Despite winning the Super Bowl and then reaching the penultimate game last year, Mahomes hasn\u2019t posted swashbuckling numbers over the past two seasons, not playing to his usual high standards.<\/p>\n
Canty said on \u201cUnSportsmanLike\u201d that he thinks Mahomes is another \u201cdown\u201d year away from potentially losing his status as the No. 1 quarterback in football.<\/p>\n
\u201cMahomes is incredibly accomplished, and he is the best player in this sport bar none,\u201d Canty said. \u201cWe are one more average season by the numbers from Mahomes, from having a conversation about who the best quarterback in the NFL is. Not who has the best resume, but who the best quarterback in the NFL currently is.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes hasn\u2019t performed statistically well the past two seasons.<\/p>\n That is some statement.<\/p>\n Given that Mahomes has dominated the AFC for the best part of eight years, and considering that despite his down stats in the past two seasons, he\u2019s still 25-7 and has won the AFC championship in recent years as well.<\/p>\n But as Canty points out, Mahomes\u2019 numbers aren\u2019t what they used to be.<\/p>\n A little over 4,000 passing yards in 2023, and under that in 2024, with a combined 53 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.<\/p>\n Looking at the last two seasons, among other quarterbacks, Mahomes ranks fourth in yards, 11th in completion percentage, seventh in yards per game and touchdowns, second in interceptions, 18th in passer rating and third in wins.<\/p>\n So, Mahomes hasn\u2019t been great, but he hasn\u2019t been bad either. However, this is what happens when you\u2019ve been great for so long: high standards are expected.<\/p>\n Could another poor statistical season really put Mahomes\u2019 No. 1 quarterback status at risk?<\/p>\n I don\u2019t see it, but that\u2019s quite the conversation starter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is widely considered the best quarterback in football, but is that status in doubt?
