As Texas continues to reel from one of the most\u00a0devastating floods in U.S. history<\/strong>, a single story has gripped the nation\u2014and\u00a0left NFL star Patrick Mahomes in tears<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her name was\u00a0Malaya Hammond<\/strong>. She was just\u00a017 years old<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And she died a\u00a0hero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the morning of\u00a0July 5<\/strong>, as her family drove toward a Christian summer camp in the Texas Hill Country, their van\u00a0was swept off Cow Creek Bridge<\/strong>\u00a0in Marble Falls\u2014engulfed in the raging waters after a flash flood tore through the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith no time to stop, their minivan plunged into a raging river,\u201d said family friend Mikki Willis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As the Hamond family drove over the Cow Creek Bridge in the heavy rain and dark conditions, the family ended up driving off a cliff due to flooding across the bridge
